About ScottMadden Management Consultants
ScottMadden is a management consulting firm that operates in two main areas: Energy and Corporate and Shared Services. While it is best known for its work in the energy industry, the firm's Corporate & Shared Services practice works across many industries with clients in entertainment, healthcare, manufacturing, high tech/communications, retail, and higher education.
Founded in 1983, the firm is headquartered in Atlanta, GA with additional offices in Raleigh, NC and Westborough, MA. From these locations, the firm works on projects for clients all over the world, albeit with a strong concentration of work coming in North America.
Putting the Scott in ScottMadden
The firm was founded by utility industry executive Peter Scott, whose first client also happened to be the utility where he had previously worked. According to the firm, Scott partnered with the client and became a long-term advisor, setting a model for client engagement-including a focus on long-term results-that ScottMadden lives by today. Indeed, the firm continues to support that first client still.
Since 2000, the firm has been led by current CEO and President Brad Kitchens, who has more than 25 years of experience in business and consulting. A former employee of Deloitte & Touche, Kitchens' pre-ScottMadden resume includes stints in Deloitte's capital markets practice, as well as several years in the oil and gas industry.
No cookie cutters allowed
According to the firm's website, ScottMadden's differentiation within the consulting industry comes from its willingness to create long-term partnerships with its clients and to personalize its work based on each client's specific needs. Indeed, that commitment to meeting needs is what led the firm to expand its practice areas beyond energy in the early 2000s, in the process moving away from being a niche practitioner and toward the role of a general management consulting provider.

ScottMadden Explores the Threat Nuclear Plant Closures Pose to Renewables Progress and the Clean Energy Future of the United States
ScottMadden, Inc. recently released the white paper, “Spinning our Wheels: How Nuclear Plant Closures Threaten to Offset Gains from Renewables.” This report explores how the progress created by solar and wind carbon-free generation is “at risk” of being reversed due to early retirement of currently operating nuclear plants.
The U.S. electric-generation sector has been working to address climate change, focusing primarily on investments in renewables. Despite the significant growth in renewable energy in the past decade, meaningful gains in carbon-free generation are in jeopardy. As existing well-running nuclear power plants in the United States face early retirement, the industry is falling back on output from existing fossil plants. In order to project how this could affect the clean energy future of the United States, ScottMadden analyzed “at-risk” nuclear assets in correlation with the potential growth in renewables.

ScottMadden, Inc. has released its latest edition of The Energy Industry Update (EIU). Themed “How Soon Is Now?,” this EIU explores the critical changes in the industry today and addresses the time-sensitive nature of those changes.
There is a growing mix of voices advocating for change in the energy industry—whether that is transitioning away from coal, increasing renewables, deploying distributed energy resources, or dealing with increased reliance on natural gas. But how quickly can we make the changes given the long-lived nature of infrastructure assets and established regulatory constructs? And what actions should we prioritize and how might these changes affect reliability and affordability of energy? In this report, ScottMadden offers the latest on how the industry is answering the call for change.
