The Henderson legacy
BCG was founded in 1963 by Bruce D. Henderson, a former Bible salesman and Harvard B-school dropout. Challenged by the CEO of The Boston Safe Deposit & Trust Company to form a consulting arm for the organization, Henderson responded with an aggressive strategy. While his first month's billings amounted to $500 and his office had a staff of just two by the end of his first year in business, Henderson's subsequent success is impossible to deny-and it was driven largely by expansion. In 1966, BCG became the first Western strategy consulting outfit in Japan, and a string of offices throughout Europe soon followed. By 1976, half of the firm's revenue was being generated outside the U.S.-a year after Henderson laid out a plan for employee stock ownership that saw the firm fully owned by BCGers in 1979. Such was Henderson's reputation within the business world that, following his death in 1992, no less a publication than the Financial Times wrote that "few people have had as much impact on international business in the second half of the twentieth century as the founder of The Boston Consulting Group."
In 1998, BCG established the Strategy Institute, a sort of consulting think tank set up to apply insights from a variety of disciplines to the strategic challenges facing both business and society. Among the concepts developed by the firm over the years are the experience curve (which charts improvements in efficiency as experience is amassed), time-based competition (an approach that recognizes speed as an essential component of success), disease management (an approach to patient care that takes a more systemic view of quality and costs than traditional approaches), richness versus reach (the trade-off inherent in the economics of information), trading up and trading down (consumer spending phenomena) and globality (the post-globalization era in which everyone from everywhere competes for everything).
PTO: Not just an acronym
It's no secret that life in a top-tier consulting firm can be stressful and that dealing with the hours can be one of the hardest aspects for consultants. To address the challenges of the job, BCG partnered with Harvard Business School in the creation of its PTO (Predictability, Teaming, and Open Communication) program, which it debuted in 2005. Since then the firm has rolled this out across U.S. Systems, launched worldwide, and it is now in every BCG office. According to the firm, "PTO is now a fundamental BCG People Platform, used to drive business priorities at case level, driving client value, while giving our employees a sense of control and accomplishment. This program recognizes that a satisfying, sustainable career at BCG is about more than minimizing hours-it is also when you have personal control, purpose and accomplishment."
Paying it forward
BCG is big on being good. The firm strives to provide a lasting social contribution to the world. Its social impact practice network, which functions like one of the firm's formal practice areas, works with clients on socially conscious issues, including public health, education, community and economic development, environmental preservation, hunger, and arts and culture. BCG works on over 350 social impact projects with over 200 organizations around the world each year. They have a number of partnerships with organizations like Save the Children, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Teach for All. These partnerships enable the firm to extend their impact through involvement in "global challenges" - including the eradication of malaria, and the fight against child hunger. In October of 2015, BCG announced their sixth global Social Impact partner Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, and his network of Social Business organizations.

BCG Tops List of Leading Change Management Providers Worldwide
ALM Intelligence’s Latest Ranking Report named BCG the leading change-management provider in their report The ALM Vanguard: Communications and Change Management Consulting 2019. In this independent annual report that compares consulting companies worldwide, BCG outpaced its competitors to become the top choice for companies undergoing either discrete change projects or enterprise-wide transformation. The report notes that BCG’s Agile Transformation Management approach “helps clients develop a holistic approach where the journey is orchestrated at the leader, individual, and program levels, thus building agility into all strands of organizational DNA…[and] ensures the employee is at the center of all change effort, a goal achieved through experience design and reinforced with the firm’s digital tools.”
BCG amplifies footprint in Pittsburgh
In recent years, Pittsburgh has proven to be a thriving hub for tech, providing a sandbox for autonomous vehicles, cutting-edge robotics, and hosting a number of pioneering startups and digital organizations. Part of BCG’s mission is to help companies and organizations help shape their future and challenge established thinking. By bringing this mission to Pittsburgh, we aim to work with leaders and thinkers who are truly pushing the envelope to unlock value from digital, change the trajectories of their business and industries, and build new capabilities. BCG is not new to Pittsburgh, having first extended its roots two years ago with the acquisition of MAYA Design, a digital design and innovation lab spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 1989. As part of BCG Platinion, MAYA broadened the firm’s digital offerings and capabilities, applying human-centered design to support digital transformations across industries. The Pittsburgh location will continue to help BCG focus on applying human-centered design, while also deepening our practices in AI and advanced manufacturing—all while contributing to the growing businesses and the economy of this vibrant city, state, and region.
BCG Acquires Kernel Analytics to Expand Data Analytics and AI Offering
BCG continues to expand its presence in the digital domain by acquiring Kernel Analytics, a leading European consultancy specializing in data science and advanced analytics. The newly acquired firm broadens the capabilities of BCG GAMMA, the analytics powerhouse of BCG that leverages world-class analytics and artificial intelligence to unlock the business performance potential of the world’s leading companies. Kernel Analytics will be fully integrated into BCG GAMMA and will become part of the BCG ecosystem. As part of the transaction, Kernel’s founders and their team of nearly 100 people will join BCG GAMMA.
BCG Is Among Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality
BCG has earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for the twelfth time and was named one of HRC’s “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality.” The 2019 scorecard evaluates LGBTQ-related policies and practices, including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic-partner benefits, and transgender-inclusive health care benefits. “We are immensely proud of our perfect score for the twelfth year on the Corporate Equality Index. This is only possible because every day, BCG team members everywhere recognize that inclusion, humanity, and empathy are drivers of innovation and value,” said Joe Davis, BCG’s chairman of North America. “The diversity of experience and background amongst our teams creates opportunities to flourish and succeed. The contribution of our people is fundamental to our success.”
BCG Launches First 100% Digital Immersion Center in Paris
Digital transformation accounts for close to 40% of BCG’s business activity. To strengthen these services, the firm has developed Immersion Centers, spaces designed to focus on the digital transformation of companies. The first of these centers has just opened in Paris. Its purpose: to offer business executives an immersive experience of digital transformation. In the coming months, BCG will launch additional Immersion Centers in Silicon Valley, New York City, Asia, and Germany. The purpose of the Immersion Centers isn’t to test or present new technologies, but to create immersive experiences for leaders to help them quickly resolve the unique challenges they face in connection with their company’s digital transformation. More broadly, the centers align with BCG’s goal of making the executive committee the main actor in a digital transformation, and of enabling the committee to successfully roll out digital transformation at scale.
MIT Sloan Management Review and BCG Study Dispels Five Major Myths About AI
A new global study conducted by MIT Sloan Management Review (MIT SMR) and The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) dispels some key myths around AI. For example, while easily documented cost savings are a classic way of garnering support for further investment, the finding here is that all but the most passive organizations anticipate AI will pay off most of the revenue-generating side. Added coauthor Philipp Gerbert, senior partner and leader of AI in Business for BCG, “Pioneers move beyond individual AI use-cases toward AI at scale. To reap the benefits of AI, they have started to transform their businesses.”
