Great if you want to work in Dallas Fort Worth Area. Lots of Dallas firms looking for local people recruit there.

Downers

If you are not in tight with career services you are a very low priority. Found them generally unhelpful.

Comments

Its very expensive. I'd be hesitant to go without scholarships if state schools with similar rankings are available.

While many of the tenured and tenure-track professors are above average, the school employs a sizeable adjunct population, especially for classes scheduled in the evenings. Most of these adjuncts have no formal teaching experience. Pedagogically, therefore, they bring little value to the classroom, and the overall educational and academic experience at SMU suffers as a result.

Quality of Life

The law school's facilities are ancient, behind the curve technologically, and generally in disrepair. Although the neighborhood is great and other parts of the campus have been remodeled and updated, the law school and its facilities are relics.

Admissions

The admissions process is fairly routine and includes an application and personal statement requirement. The financial aid opportunities exist, but the law school's financial aid coordinator proved terribly unhelpful. Once he advised me that he "didn't have time" to answer my aid questions.

Socratic method used in first year, but not much beyond that. Class sizes are relatively large, can be too crowded. School is very competitive, but some classes do not curve, so students that take these classes seem to have an advantage. Most classes are highly theoretical, which is of limited use for students because most students from this school end up practicing law, not teaching/writing about it. Most faculty seem not to care about the students, with the exception of two to three professors. Some of the newer associate professors seem to care, but it is unclear if they will make tenure.

Quality of Life

Cost of living is far too high anywhere near the school. The library is well kept and accessible. The campus is beautiful and maintained well. The computer labs are well functioning and the IT staff is exceptional. Crime and safety does not appear to be an issue. The overall happiness level is low, though, because there is very little faculty/Dean involvement in student life.
