Academics

The first year of the Smeal program focuses on intensive studies on all the business foundation courses including statistics, finance, ethics, and strategic management and leadership. The second year then applies the foundations to your selected concentration area of expertise.

Quality of Life

We have a rather new facility with great accessibility to computers, faculty, and staff. Moreover, there is little (if any) crime in the State College community.

Admissions

The Smeal MBA application process is very focused on ethics and leadership. The application essays are based on Smeal's belief that principled leaders are ethical leaders within their profession and in the community. In addition to the essays, Smeal also requires students to complete a formal interview with the admissions team. Again the focus is on your leadership skills within your career and the community but also your academics.

Course curriculum and concentration programs are extremely focused and tailored towards enhancing tangible business skills of students. Additionally, the program operates on a schedule that keeps students incredibly busy while enhancing their ability to function in a fast pace working environment. Also, Penn State's program exercises students' ability to develop team processes and dynamic.

Quality of Life

Cost of living is fairly inexpensive. Facilities are top of the line and extremely accessible. Housing is widely available. Dining is extremely varied domestically and internationally. There is virtually no record of significant incidents involving criminal activity aside from what can be seen on any typical university. Overall happiness is viral (State College is located in "Happy Valley"). Great location (virtually the same short drive to NYC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C. and Baltimore).

Admissions

Penn State's application process is unlike any other program I applied to. The selection process seems to be based more around the prospective student's "best fit" into the program. This means that not one portion of the application is weighed more or less than another portion. Instead, the program selects applicants based off of how much the prospective student can provide when they are accepted and matriculated into the program. Additionally, the admissions staff is very cognizant of how well they believe a prospective is able to handle the coursework and pace of the program.

Quality of Life

Cost of Living is very cheap. I have 2 roommates and we pay $1450 for a 3 Bedroom, 3.5 Bathroom, 2000 square foot townhouse about 10 minutes away from campus. The Business Building is amazing. Plenty of options for dining and social life, without being overwhelming

Admissions

Admissions Process was pretty standard. Application with 3 essays, focused on experience, leadership and ethics/values. To be eligible for scholarships, you had to submit application by the end of January. I submitted mine the last week of January, heard within a week they wanted to interview me. I interviewed via webcam (very accessible interview process) and heard a couple weeks later I was accepted, about 2 weeks later I heard about my scholarship. Very painless process.

Quality of Life

The quality of life is great. It is not expensive to live here and it is one of the best campuses in the US. There are opportunities everyone to enhance your quality of life and the town offers everything.
