Academics

Excessive core requirements, not enough course offerings of core classes or even upper-division classes, unnecessary emphasis on second-language requirements (admissions will not acknowledge 4 years of foreign language taken in high school as being adequate), no quality control or acknowledgment of student complaints regarding professors (one professor distributed a student-made gay porn site to his Argumentative Writing class and was not chastised by the English department).

Quality of Life

Facilities are not well-kept besides the janitorial service emptying trash cans and cleaning the bathrooms. The buildings are in disrepair and one in particular has been cited as being structurally unsafe due to never being renovated in its 86 year history. Email security alerts describe students who have been mugged or assaulting in the evening hours on campus, and one student in particular has been exposed as having filmed himself masturbating in classrooms after hours in unlocked lecture halls. Many students, including myself, are not happy with the worsening quality of education we have been receiving, and the morale of the student body is growing worse as the campus facilities seem to be continually ignored.

Admissions

Fill out the UH System Application, send transcripts, and expect an acceptance letter.

Honors program allowed students to excel. Otherwise, opportunities in my department were slim.

Quality of Life

Beautiful campus outside, grotty dirty smelly buildings inside, infrequently cleaned or maintained. School is ALWAYS too cold so everyone carries a heavy sweater. Food is not great, although more options from independent vendors (ie not Sodexo) becoming available.

Advisors are completely unhelpful, the requirements are all over the place and ever-changing, it seems like the school makes you work to learn what you want to learn (including writing proposals just to declare certain majors or double major). Office hours are incredibly full or short and even the school counselors are judgemental, immature, and unprofessional.

Quality of Life

Cost of living is going up and becoming unreasonable, campus facilities are lacking compared to other schools of this size, libraries are there but unhelpful, neighborhood is fairly safe, community relations are strong and cultural, overall happiness is neutral.

Admissions

No essays, no real resume questions, no interviews. VERY FLEXIBLE WITH DATES!

Many instructors hand out easy grades, which decreases the value of a college degree and does nothing for many students.

Quality of Life

Poor facilities, lots of late-night assaults on students, poor customer service for just about anything.

Admissions

Student qualifications are low and admission is more bureaucratic than much else.
