Encouraging peers and faculty; residential college system; beautiful and small campus

Downers

College parties can be rowdy if you're not into that scene

Inclusive culture, college dorm and social dynamic is healthy and provides everyone with a network should you choose to engage.

Downers

Limited scope of academic focuses. Math and sciences are exceedingly strong but stalwarts like business are lacking.

Comments

A very unique culture and experience in a beautiful setting. Know that you are interested in majors offered before attending.

Great people - fun, smart, and down-to-earth

Small classes with great professors

Beautiful campus, nicely located in Houston

Downers

Lots of engineering students and pre-meds

Expensive and financial aid is a pain

Comments

Tough school to get into. Great for people who enjoy learning, discussing ideas, but also don't want to take themselves too seriously.

“Great academics, but standout residential college system”
January 2016CURRENT STUDENT

Residential college system is what distinguishes Rice University from other top 20 schools. As expected, the academics at all of these schools are great (Rice is no exception), but what Rice does best is create a unique social atmosphere that allows for a close-knit community filled with friendly inter-college rivalries and college pride. Harvard and Yale also advertise their own residential college system, but Rice's is way more defining of the overall culture. Definitely check this out to see if you'll like it (most people do) before coming here.

Downers

Since summer jobs are easiest to find around Rice, many students endure the summer heat/humidity and it isn't exaggerated (but this is more than made up for by being able to wear flip flops every month of the academic calendar). Parking is kind of a hassle, but for being in the middle of the 4th largest city in the U.S., it's probably worth it.

Comments

Can't emphasize enough how much you should look into Rice's residential college system - it is a huge part of the culture here.

Good academics, a lot of big companies from Houston recruit at Rice.

Downers

The food is terrible, not a very well-run school, parking is a hassle

Comments

Consider the size of the school before you come. I would recommend only if you like being in a small environment.
