Education and Training Requirements

High School

Solar energy sales representatives and assessors must have an understanding of solar energy and solar systems and equipment as well as business and customer service skills. A well-rounded education is a good foundation for this profession. Take classes in math, science, environmental science, business, computer science, and English. Public speaking classes will help hone communication and persuasion skills that are important in sales jobs. Shop classes can also be helpful for learning basic machinery and technical skills, which could come in handy while on the job.

Postsecondary Education

Most employers prefer to hire solar sales representatives and assessors who have a bachelor's degree. Majors for this job vary. Coursework that is helpful covers biology, chemistry, engineering, computers, business, mathematics, marketing, economics, communications, and English. Foreign language classes can also be helpful for improving sales.

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

Solar sales representatives and assessors may receive voluntary certification to demonstrate a high level of skills and knowledge in their field. Professional associations that offer certification programs include the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners, which offers the PV Technical Sales certification to qualified individuals who meet education and work experience requirements and pass certification exams. The National Association of Sales Professionals offers certification programs in sales. Other associations that offer certification programs are the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and Solar Energy International, among many others.

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Solar energy sales representatives and assessors usually have several years of sales experience. They receive on-the-job training which may last several weeks or up to several months. They must be knowledgeable about solar energy, solar equipment and systems, and engineering science and technology as it relates to solar products and goods. They must be well versed in sales and marketing methods and principles. The ability to work independently and to collaborate with other solar energy professionals is important in this field. Strong, clear oral and written communication skills are essential. Solar sales representatives and assessors must have good interpersonal skills in order to develop and maintain relationships with customers and make sales. People who do best in this job have initiative and are persistent. They are detail oriented and thorough in their work, are reliable and responsible, and have a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
