Founded in 1949, New Dramatists offers a playwright residency program through which a group of five to eight individuals are selected each year for a free seven-year residence. Playwright residents have access to the New Dramatists’ facilities, which include a mainstage theater, manuscript library, meeting room, private writing rooms, and studio space. Notable alumni include Maria Irene Fornes, Donald Marguiles, John Patrick Shanley, Suzan-Lori Parks, Nilo Cruz, John Guare, Lynn Nottage, David Lindsay-Abaire, Doug Wright, and August Wilson. The organization’s mission is to “find gifted playwrights and give them the time, space, and tools to develop their craft, so that they may fulfill their potential and make lasting contributions to the theatre.”
New Dramatists offers the Bernard B. Jacobs Internship Program, which provides participants with an inside look at the playwright process and access to a variety of workshops, readings, events, and shows. Interns work in several areas--including administrative, casting and stage management, development, executive and artistic directors’ assistant, and literary services--and also assist with stage managing for readings and workshops. They participate in workshops by playwrights and staff on such topics as careers in theatre, playwriting, and the theatre industry.
Open to undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students.
