Established in 1848, the Association for the Advancement of Science (“AAAS”) is a nonprofit organization and professional organization that seeks to promote the advancement and understanding of science. The organization publishes various scientific publications, including the journal Science, newsletters, books, and reports. AAAS sponsors the Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program, which focuses on creating greater understanding of science-related issues by growing coverage of these topics in the media.
The Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program offers students in science fields the opportunity to work within media organizations to hone their communications skills. Fellows work within magazines, newspapers, radio stations, and television stations and learn how to communicate complex scientific topics in a way that the public can understand. Interns may work as reporters, editors, researchers, or production assistants. Examples of some organizations that have hosted fellows are the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and Scientific American. This fellowship is specifically designed for student scientists, not for those with non-technical backgrounds pursuing journalism and writing careers.
Open to college seniors, graduate students, and doctoral candidates in the fields of natural science, physical science, health science, engineering, computer science, or social science. Recent graduates are eligible but must apply within one year of graduation or defense of their thesis. Non-US citizens are welcome to apply. Fellowships are not open to English, journalism, science journalism, or other non-technical majors.
