Our Growing Forward strategy calls for investing more than $6 billion in Michigan over the next five years. That includes significant investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, environmental and customer service enhancements, and new power generation.
Here at Consumers Energy we offer paid summer internships typically starting in May and ending in August to college students. Some interns are offered the option of continuing their internship on a part time basis. Our interns value this as a strategy to gain real world experience while completing their degrees.
Specific examples of these tasks and activities that interns are assigned include various assignments in:
Information Technology and Security
Business and Human Resource Operations
Server installation and administration
Internet programming and Web site development
Business analysis and testing
Business modeling and expense management
In 2011, Consumers Energy was awarded the Employer of the Year award for its Corporate Intern Program by the Michigan Career Educator and Employer Alliance organization. The tasks and activities assigned to interns was an important component of this award. The best and brightest interns are recruited to help solve energy challenges of the future. At Consumers Energy we embrace a mentoring philosophy for our college intern program. Our interns are mentored in a variety of ways that allow our college students the firsthand experience of working side by side with a skilled and highly trained Consumers Energy manager. Interns are assigned to a specific supervisor and a team that will guide and mentor the student by demonstrating professional behaviors. We believe that mentoring can improve recruitment and retention, enhance employee development, increase diversity and foster cultural awareness as well as develop a positive competitive spirit.
Our internship program is known to provide a family type of networking and support system for our interns. In a recent survey, one of our interns said, “I think Consumers would be a great place to work. I have done internships with other companies, but Consumers stands out to me because even though it’s a very large company, its more of a family business” meaning that Consumers has many support organizations which a lot of other companies don’t have. Consumers has a lot of opportunity and a lot of people who care enough to help you reach your full potential in the company if you choose to do so”.
Candidates must possess a combination of the following:
-Willingness to learn
-Effective and written communication skills, sometimes including a foreign language
-Knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point
-Excellent leadership ability
-Willingness and ability to work independently and as part of a team
-May require travel within the State of Michigan
-Critical thinking and problem solving skills
-Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
