Companies use its applications to more efficiently integrate and manage server, storage, and networking functions, to lower the cost of operating their IT systems. VMware also provides an extensive range of consulting, technical support, training, and certification services that accounts for just over half of its sales. The company has marketing relationships with top computer hardware vendors, including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Cisco. Data storage systems maker EMC holds a controlling stake in VMware.

PhD Intern Opportunities: PhD interns get exposure to wide range of software platform technologies and could find themselves working in Systems, Computer Virtualization, Operating Systems, Cloud Networking and Security, Distributed Systems, Performance Engineering, Front End Engineering, Back End Engineering, User Experience, User Interface, or Quality Engineering. PhD Interns at VMware will have the opportunity to work on cutting edge advanced research projects; actively work and learn alongside industry thought leaders; publish their work in the VMware Technical Journal and external publications; attend nationally recognized academic conferences; contribute to the patent application process; and engage and network with technical experts by attending the PhD Speaker Series. Interns will also work on innovative projects that impact the organization and tie into degree research; engage in one-on-one mentorship; possibly become a Women Connecting Women (WCW) mentee; participate in engineering poster sessions with the opportunity to present to the VMware R&D community; attend networking events; get involved in application-development contests; and apply for the VMware Intern Prodigy (VIP) Campus Ambassador Program.

Office of the CTO Intern: Interns who are highly motivated, possess great coding skills, and take ownership of code (writing all tests, documentation) will work on products to enable customers to build and operate Cloud-Native Apps on vSphere. You will undertake and build advanced product features, tools, and help contribute to our open source code base. You will be working with a team of engineers on a piece of technology already seeing rapid adoption by VMware product groups. You will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the projects, company and industry.

Internal Audit Sr. Manager: As an Internal Audit Sr. Manager, you will be a part of a team delivering an innovative assurance and consulting approach that aligns with the fast paced, dynamic environment of VMware. You will have responsibility for assessing management’s testing of the design and effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting. In addition you will collaborate with your business partners to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of critical business processes and systems identified in our annual risk assessment and audit plan. Interns are expected to leverage internal audit and risk management skills to help raise awareness of financial and operational risks across these business areas. Interns will need to quickly respond to dynamic business models, applying critical thinking to identify and assess the impact of new risks.

Government Relations and Public Policy Intern: Interns will report directly to the Vice President of Global Government Relations and Public Policy and be an integral part of a team of federal and state lobbyists. Interns will research and provide analysis on policy issues surrounding technology, privacy, cloud infrastructure, and other issues relating to federal and state policy. During the internship, you will attend meetings and hearings on Capitol Hill, attend industry meetings, provide research, and support day-to-day initiatives and long-term strategies of VMware. Interns will also create newsletters, infographics, and other materials for internal and external audiences and monitor and track industry news and related legislative developments using a myriad information sources. The position is located in Washington, D.C., and Reston, Virginia. Interns must commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, full time.

Change Management Analyst: The intern will be responsible for the design, development, and delivery of training, change management, and adoption activities as assigned. Interns will work on internal projects and initiatives to create and deliver Change Management strategy and deliverables; maintain project plan for team deliverables; work to constantly improve offerings of Adoption, Change Management, and Training teams; become system and process experts in one of the supported applications; and build strong relationships with business and IT counterparts to drive user adoption and deliver effective business solutions.

MTS - Kernal Engineering: As a Member of Technical Staff – Kernel Engineering, an intern will be responsible for developing, testing and debugging VMware’s core Virtualization and Cloud Platform products. The right candidate will be responsible for ESXi operating system and core virtualization infrastructure. They will work with various kernel teams to design and deliver new functionality, mainly targeted for virtualization workloads. In addition, as a member of VMware’s Software Defined Data Center organization, an intern will directly contribute to the creation of the next generation of Storage, Networking, and Server Virtualization solutions. They will help deliver high quality, well-architected system software products and solutions based on a fully integrated enterprise-class virtualization platform. Their responsibilities will include design, implementation, testing, and debugging of systems software.

Distributed Systems Engineering Intern: As a Member of Technical Staff – Distributed Systems Engineering, an intern will be responsible for building and testing cutting edge distributed systems for performance, scalability and adaptability to today’s fast changing enterprise IT market. As a member of VMware’s Software Defined Data Center or Cloud Services organizations, they will directly contribute to the creation of the next generation of Storage, Networking, Virtualization and Cloud Platform products. They will accelerate the delivery and to improve the quality of well-architected system software solutions based on a fully integrated enterprise-class virtualization platform. Their responsibilities will include design, implementation, testing, and debugging of systems software.

 

Requirements

Requirements differ for each position.  To get a general view of what VMware is looking for from its applicants, here are requirements for specific positions advertised at the company:

PhD Intern Opportunities: Applicants must have completed coursework in operating systems, computer architecture, compilers or networking, Distributed system, Data mining, Web development, and User Interface design. They must have experience in one of the following: C, Java or C++; and Python, Perl, shell, or other scripting languages. They must also have experience or knowledge in Flex, HCI, wireframes, mockups; and CSS, HTML, XML, Flash, JavaScript. In addition, they must have experience developing client-server or distributed, multithreaded applications; and developing user space and kernel modules. Applicants must also possess a willingness to learn new technologies, including commercial and open-source; and strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Office of the CTO Intern: Applicants must be pursuing a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or some other relevant technical area. They must also possess Practical Object Oriented Design and development experience with one or more of the following languages: Java, C++, C#, GO, Python, Ruby; and have knowledge or be interested in distributed systems, multi-threaded and server-side programming. Applicants must also have a strong understanding of algorithms, systems architecture, data structures and file systems; and a strong desire to build industry leading software systems. While not mandatory, experience with Docker, Mesos or Kubernetes is a plus.

Internal Audit Sr. Manager: VMware is looking for a candidate with a BA and 10+ years of relevant experience or an MBA with 7+ years of relevant experience. A candidate with a CIA is preferred and a CPA is desirable. Applicants should have demonstrated experience successfully managing internal audit projects, conducting risk assessments, operational auditing and executing Internal Control audits. They must possess solid understanding, expertise and experience in PCAOB standards, SOX regulations, (SOX 404) and US GAAP; have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated software revenue recognition experience.The candidate must bring business experience and passion, an ability to learn new business models, demonstrated experience in ICFR testing and assessments, and a record of success in evaluating business operations. Successful candidates will possess advanced proficiency of the fundamental audit competencies (risk management & control, communication, business acumen, influence, problem solving, financial analysis) in addition to demonstrated proficiency when it comes to Thought Leadership, Results Leadership, People Leadership, Personal Leadership and Communication Leadership. In addition, an applicant must have the ability to meet stringent reporting deadlines in a fast paced environment; demonstrate a sense of urgency and should be results driven; and be flexible, adaptable and a strong team player.

Government Relations and Public Policy Intern: Applicants must current or recently graduated undergraduates with a focus in political science or technology-related field. Significant public policy, government, political science, or international affairs coursework is necessary. Juris Doctorate candidates are encouraged to apply. VMware is looking for a practical and proactive problem-solver who possesses strong business acumen and is confident, mature and calm under fire. They must be able to juggle multiple priorities and tasks in a fast paced environment, but be focused when needed on the matter at hand. They should have excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills; strong and demonstrated research skills; and must be able to work effectively both independently and with a team. In addition, experience with graphic design and/or HTML is desirable and prior experience with an elected official or state/local government is a plus.

Change Management Analyst: The applicant must be working towards BS/BA in Business, Communications, Psychology, Human Resources, or similar field. This position will require a great attitude/team player, an ability to ‘crank out’ work products and meet tight deadlines, strong writing and communication skills, good personal organization, and an ability to ‘connect’ with business partners and stakeholders from around the world. Candidates must have a strong desire to learn how to engage with stakeholders, company leaders, and team members to influence and drive initiatives; possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail are imperatives; have the ability to self-start, and have strong communication, planning, organization and time management skills to effectively develop and execute Training, Adoption, and Change Management deliverables. Candidates must be a proficient English speaker and writer, able to effectively communicate, train, create training materials, and correspond in English; have experience working cross-culturally, internationally, across multiple time-zones; and demonstrate a collaborative attitude

MTS - Kernal Engineering: An applicant must be pursuing a Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or some other relevant technical degree. They should possess excellent C programming skills, have a familiarity with kernel performance analysis and optimization; and possess advanced knowledge of operating systems internals and low-level code development. They should have excellent understanding of operating system concepts and kernel components; strong analytical and debugging skills; and experience, both in designing and developing kernel level projects, and writing high-quality, well-architected and well-documented code. They should have strong experience with kernel level programming, performance analysis and optimization; experience with SMP, memory management, CPU management, multi-tasking and device drivers; knowledge of x86 assembler, C++, Java, Perl, Python and other programming languages; and a good understanding of modern Intel and AMD x86-based processor architectures. Previous relevant internship experience is strongly preferred.

Distributed Systems Engineering Intern: An applicant must have a Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or some other relevant technical degree. They should possess Practical Object Oriented design and development experience with one or more of the following languages: C, C++ or Java. Candidates should also have advanced knowledge of distributed systems, multi-threaded and server-side programming; experience programming with Python, Perl, Bash or other scripting languages; and a strong understanding of algorithms, systems architecture, data structures and file systems.  Previous relevant internship experience is strongly preferred.
