Fast-growing Uber was established in 2009 as "UberCab" by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp to dispel the notion that transportation management is strictly for yellow taxi cabs. The company's services are available in almost 60 countries and 460 cities around the world through the Uber mobile app, which lets customers with smartphones arrange for transportation from Uber drivers who use their own cars. Customers rate drivers, while drivers can also rate customers in order to provide quality to the experience and build a person's reputation. In addition to its transportation services, the company's UberEATS app delivers food from restaurants to customers in select markets.
As the company continues to grow, its need for fresh talent to join its growing business ventures has resulted in a number of opportunities, including internships for students, such as the one highlighted below:
Product Design Internship/Co-Op (Summer 2017) – Uber is seeking talented and thoughtful design interns to help define and execute against a giant vision that builds upon what Uber has brought to the world so far. Those who fit this model will work among best-in-class designers, product managers and design-oriented engineers in a fast-paced, rapidly growing, hybrid (technology/operations) environment.
The role demands great execution, bold innovation, obsession with quality, fearlessness and optimism to be inspired by the unknown and never settle, solving problems with creativity while keeping the user in mind and ambition to take projects to the finish line.
The right candidate has a passion for great user experiences, and some work to prove it. An applicant should have a growing portfolio with some stand-out work. In addition, a potential intern should know the latest apps and design trends (on mobile, web, desktop, etc.), and have ideas and opinions on how to make many of them even better.
Those who meet the criteria and join the Uber team will be embedded directly in one of Uber’s product teams, working on a project in close collaboration with other designers. They will learn what it takes to design for millions of users – and hopefully impart some wisdom to the team, too. An intern will also test out their design ideas with all kinds of high-and-low fidelity prototypes. In addition, interns will work alongside other members of a product team to get the fit and finish right. You’ll experience release cycles and learn what details matter at each stage of the product development process.
In addition to the work experience, a number of perks that interns will enjoy include a medical, dental and vision package, Uber credits, a monthly cell phone credit and flexible start and end dates (most interns start in early May to early June and conclude their internships within 14-16 weeks).
Applicants must be actively enrolled in a Design degree program.
