Microsoft's ambitions to put a computer on every desk have evolved to put a computing device just about anywhere and connect it to the cloud rather than anchor it to a desk. Besides the Windows operating system and Office suite of productivity programs, Microsoft makes tablets (Surface), game consoles (Xbox), and smartphones (Lumia). It even introduced its first laptop computer in 2015. Still software -- for consumers and businesses -- is Microsoft's biggest source of revenue.
Microsoft has a well-earned reputation as a top employer and top firm in its field, but the company has exciting opportunities that go beyond just computer software and hardware. Microsoft also offers full-time positions in Finance and has two internship programs aimed at students looking at getting into the industry:
Financial Analyst (Undergraduate): This program has a 10-year track record of producing some of Microsoft’s top full-time finance professionals. For 12 weeks, interns will put classroom theory to the test by working on real business issues, managing the finances of a multi-billion-dollar enterprise in one of many areas of Microsoft Finance: Financial Planning and Analysis, Treasury, Capital Markets, Internal Audit, Venture Integration, Sales and Marketing, Finance, Accounting, or any one of the many business groups like Xbox, Windows Phone, Office, or Windows.
Interns will also enjoy many professional and social development opportunities. They will become a valued and integral member within their finance area and work on a variety of projects that directly impact the business, such as building models, forecasting, market research, or creating internal tools or databases. Managers work with interns to make sure projects are meaningful and relevant based on an intern's interests and development needs. Interns will also interact directly with Finance rotation program analysts, who serve as dedicated coaches for Finance interns. Coaches ensure interns have the resources and encouragement needed to succeed in an internship and they explain the career opportunities available if they return full time. The program is not all work, as interns will be able to participate in social events throughout the year.
Finance Manager (MBA): As a Finance Manager at Microsoft, interns will be encouraged to think big and use their insight on complex, large-scale projects that directly affect the company’s bottom line. To meet the demands of this role, an intern must act as a change agent—as adept at framing problems and communicating solutions as they are with crunching numbers. Candidates must be confident enough to make tough decisions in times of ambiguity.
An intern will be responsible for driving monthly and quarterly business processes; defining performance-based business metrics; coordinating financial support within or across subsidiaries or regions; developing business investment and sales strategy recommendations; creating financial models for proposed market investments and sales programs; evaluating new business opportunities and make meaningful recommendations to senior management; providing timely reporting and analysis as it relates to the monthly flash, monthly business review, quarterly CFO forecast, mid-year review, and budget and business plan reviews; and seeking improvements in key business processes, especially those that require cross-group participation.
Requirements differ based on the internship program:
Financial Analyst (Undergraduate): Must have a bachelor’s in finance, accounting, economics, business or related fields (pursuing with at least one semester/quarter remaining after internship). In addition, one or two year’s classroom or work experience in financial analysis preferred. Candidates must also show demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
Finance Manager (MBA): An MBA degree (pursuing from full-time studies) is required. Candidates must also possess excellent cross-group collaboration skills, including the ability to comfortably communicate with senior management at Microsoft and strong analytical and strategic thinking, but also be not afraid to act. Candidates must also speak the English language and possess local language fluency for all roles (non-U.S. locations).
