CBIZ, Inc. was founded in 1996 as a result of the merger between Republic Environmental Systems and Century Surety Group. The two companies combined to become International Alliance Services, Inc. (IASI). In December 1997, IASI changed its name to Century Business Services, Inc.  Often referred to as "CBIZ" due to its NASDAQ ticker symbol, the company legally changed its name to CBIZ, Inc. in August 2005. CBIZ began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in August 2006 under the symbol "CBZ."

MHM  has roots dating back to 1954 when Ernest D. Mayer opened an accounting practice in Kansas City, MO. Mayer later merged his practice with one owned by Bill Hoffman. In 1978, Chuck McCann joined the firm and its name changed to Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C. In 1998, MHM spun off its tax and consulting practice to Century Business Services, Inc.; at this time, a formal structure was established for the two companies to work closely together in meeting client needs.
