Overall, lawyers are expected to have average employment growth (4 percent) through 2029, according to the Department of Labor. About 32,000 lawyers are expected to be added to the U.S. economy during this time span. It’s very difficult to land a job as a lawyer at a venture capital firm because the industry is extremely small and most managing partners are unwilling to hire attorneys who they do not know personally or who have not been recommended by colleagues. Still, there will always be a need for skilled VC lawyers to help firms perform due diligence, draft legal documents, and protect intellectual property. “Business today is knowledge-based and technology-focused, making the protection of patents and trademarks a thriving practice area,” according to national staffing firm Robert Half. Although the coronavirus pandemic negatively impacted many businesses in 2020, venture capital firms were able to continue business operations remotely. Venture capital activity dipped slightly in the first half of 2020 but has been picking up since then. Venture capital lawyers will see an increase in employment opportunities post pandemic and in the coming years. VC lawyers will have better odds of finding in-house work at a corporation (such as Qualcomm, GE, or Johnson & Johnson) that has a venture capital unit.
