The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) predicts that employment for most railroad transportation occupations, including signal mechanics, will decline through 2029. Although demand for rail transportation is decreasing in areas such as bulk commodities and oil and natural gas, intermodal freight shipment have been increasing. The DOL anticipates that most jobs will open as a result of workers who retire from the industry, but notes that competition for these positions will be significant. Because of the increasingly complex circuitry involved in the signaling systems, signal maintainers with the strongest technical training will be in the greatest demand in the coming years.
