Sales engineers work for industrial, scientific, and technological companies, selling advanced, complex products and services to customers. The Department of Labor reported that in May 2015, there were 72,200 sales engineers employed in the United States. Many work for companies that offer computer systems design and related services, and for wholesale electronics markets and agents and brokers. Other employers include machinery, equipment, and supplies merchant wholesalers; and professional and commercial equipment and supplies merchant wholesalers.
