Many radiologists work in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, nursing homes, outpatient care facilities, or specialized radiological services.

Starting Out

Radiologists get their start in their career during their medical residency. They often receive job offers upon completion of their residency and passing of the medical licensure examination. They find jobs through their school's career services office, their state's medical board, professional associations, and also by contacting hospitals, clinics, and outpatient facilities.

Radiologists advance by getting board certified. They hone their knowledge and skills throughout their years of practice, building a reputation for their expertise and excellence in their field. Those that work in a radiology department of a hospital or large clinic may advance to become senior radiologists or department heads, hiring and supervising the work of health care teams. Some may get a doctoral degree in a subspecialty and teach in colleges and universities. Radiologists also advance by writing for medical journals and teaching workshops and speaking at conferences hosted by professional associations.
