Starting salaries vary according to the skill and experience of the applicant, the nature of the position, and the size of the company. Survey researchers earned a median salary of $53,920 in May 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Earnings ranged from less than $22,300 to $99,500 or more. Those in academic positions may earn somewhat less than their counterparts in the business community, but federal government salaries are competitive with those in the private sector.
