Employment Prospects

Employers

Some podcasters are employed by corporations, media companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Creating podcasts may be just a small part of their regular job duties. People in these settings obtain job leads from job search sites and at networking events.

Starting Out

The best way to break into the field of podcasting is to create your own podcast with an original concept and market it through social media. The more experience you obtain as a podcaster, the more skilled you will become. Basic podcasting software can be downloaded for free, and one can create a fairly high-quality podcast (a podcasting software host, headphones, a mixer, and a microphone) for well under $1,000.

Advancement Prospects

There is no standard advancement path for podcasters. As mentioned earlier, podcasting is often a part-time job or even a hobby. An inexperienced podcaster advances by improving the quality of his or her podcast, attracting more listeners, and increasing advertising revenue. Some podcasters pursue more traditional careers in broadcasting such as disc jockey or newscaster.
