According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in May 2015 the median annual salary for petroleum engineers was $129,990. The lowest paid 10 percent earned $74,880 or less. The top 25 percent earned $185,050 or more. The Society of Petroleum Engineers reports that its professional members working in the upstream oil and gas industry reported average total compensation of $206,020 in 2015.
