Online Journalists

Unions and Associations

Online journalists may obtain union representation from the National Writers Union and The Newspaper Guild-Communication Workers of America. Additionally, many professional associations provide valuable resources to online journalists. The Society of Professional Journalists describes itself on its Web site as "the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization." Its mission includes the promotion of the free flow of information; protection of the First Amendment; stimulation of high standards, ethical behavior, and excellence; and the encouragement of diversity in journalism. The Online News Association (ONA), which describes itself as "the world’s largest association of digital journalists," is a nonprofit membership organization for digital journalists that connects journalism, technology, and innovation. Its members educate each other through webinars, ONA training camps, an annual conference, and a Web site. Other useful organizations for online journalists include Investigative Reporters and Editors and the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
