Makeup Artists

Unions and Associations

As a makeup artist, you may want to consider joining a union. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories, and Canada (IATSE) represents workers in theater, film, and television production. Hair stylists, makeup artists, engineers, art directors, and set designers are some of the professionals who belong to the 375 local unions affiliated with the alliance. Union membership is not required of most makeup artists for film, theater, and fashion, but it can help individuals negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Theaters in larger cities may require union membership of makeup artists, while smaller, regional theaters across the country are less likely to require membership. The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) and IATSE Local 798 are local unions of the IATSE.
