Earnings vary widely, depending on employer, geographical location, and experience and training level. According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the median hourly wage for these workers in May 2015 was $11.27, or an annual salary of $23,440. The lowest wages reported were less than $8.44 (annual salary of $17,550), and the highest were more than $18.91 per hour (annual salary of $39,320). Cleaning personnel for the postal service earned the highest wages in May 2015, earning $47,200 a year, while those working for colleges, universities, and professional schools earned $13.97 per hour (annual salary of $29,050), and the lowest paying segment were those who provided services to buildings and dwellings. They earned a median wage of $11.45 (annual salary of $23,820) per hour. When it comes to geographic locations, the DOL reports that employers in Massachusetts, Alaska, and Connecticut offered these workers the highest wages.
