Certification or Licensing

Although not a requirement for finding a job, some janitors opt to become certified by IEHA, which offers several levels of certification or programs that indicate a certain degree of professionalism and training and may be beneficial in finding a job or in moving to better positions. IEHA's Certified Frontline Association Program is designed for entry-level through supervisory-level housekeeping employees, to help them learn cleaning techniques and attain high quality standards. The certified executive housekeeper, requires that the applicant be a high school graduate, complete a prescribed number of classroom or self-study hours, and pass an examination. The registered executive housekeeper designation can be obtained by completing a collegiate degree program and passing an examination. The master's designation is the highest in the profession and requires the employee work in a management capacity for at least eight years. These certifications must be renewed every two years.
