Interior Designers and Decorators

Employment for interior designers and decorators is expected to grow by 4 percent through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), or more slowly than the average for all careers. The services of design professionals are in many ways a luxury, the job outlook is heavily dependent on the economy. In times of prosperity, there is a steady increase in jobs. When the economy slows down, however, opportunities in the field decrease markedly. Job opportunities for interior designers in specialized design services firms are expected to be better—increasing by 8 percent through 2024. The DOL reports that "interior designers focus on increasingly specialized design areas such as hospitality, healthcare, and commercial and corporate design. There will be a greater need for them to collaborate with other designers and in other design-related fields."
