Economists are among the highest-paid social scientists. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary for economists was $99,180 in May 2015. The lowest paid 10 percent made less than $52,540 and the highest paid 10 percent earned more than $176,960. Economists employed by the federal government earned average salaries of $114,600 in May 2015. Private-industry economists' salaries can be much higher, into the mid six figures. Economics professors earned salaries that ranged from less than $45,220 to $184,240 or more.
