Formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, ABET promotes and advances education in engineering and engineering technologies, among other fields. Prospective civil engineering technicians should earn their associate's degree from ABET-certified programs. A nonprofit agency that promotes activities that increase student enrollment in engineering and engineering technology colleges and universities is the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians (ASCET) is a professional society created for and administered by engineering technicians and technologists in all disciplines. America's oldest engineering society, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), represents more than 140,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) provides universally recognized certification for all individuals in engineering, engineering technology, and related fields.
