Cinematographers and Directors of Photography

Unions and Associations

The International Cinematographers Guild is a union whose members include directors of photography, camera operators and assistants, visual effects supervisors, and still photographers. The Guild exists within the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). Members are highly skilled technicians working in film, television, live entertainment, animation, special effects, and new media. The union helps members get fair wages and provides benefits such as pension, health care, and disability insurance. Some employers will only hire union members for certain projects. The American Society of Cinematographers is an association dedicated to advancing the art of filmmaking. It publishes American Cinematographer magazine, which offers articles to educate aspiring filmmakers and others about the art and craft of cinematography.
