Career and Employment Counselors and Technicians


Salaries vary greatly within the career and vocational counseling field. In April 2016, reported the average salary for career counselors was $47,000. The U.S. Department of Labor places career counselors within the category of educational, guidance, school, and vocational counselors. The median yearly earnings for this group were $53,660 in May 2015, according to the Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The lowest paid 10 percent of these workers earned less than $32,280 per year, and the highest paid 10 percent made more than $87,640 annually. Those working for elementary and secondary schools had annual mean incomes of $63,760 in 2015; for colleges, universities, and professional schools, $49,770; and for junior colleges, $56,730. Vocational-rehabilitation counselors earned annual mean wages of $40,800, and individual and family services counselors earned an annual mean income of $41,740 in 2015. Annual earnings of career counselors vary greatly among educational institutions, with larger institutions offering the highest salaries. Counselors in business or industry tend to earn higher salaries.
