Botanists

Outlook

Employment for agricultural and food scientists, including plant and soil scientists, is expected to increase about as fast as the average through 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Botanists will be needed to help meet growing environmental, conservation, pharmaceutical, and similar demands. Employment opportunities with state and local government agencies should remain good, but will depend in part on the continued health of the national economy. Employment at the federal level depends on federal funding, and budget cuts will jeopardize some projects and positions. Private industry is expected to provide the most job opportunities. Employment will be best for botanists with an advanced degree.
