Employment Prospects


There are about 5,760 archivists working in the United States. Archivists can find employment in various fields. Approximately 37 percent are employed in government positions, working for the Department of Defense, the National Archives and Records Administration, and other local, state, and federal repositories. About 18 percent of archivists are employed in academia, working in college and university libraries. Other archivists work in positions for museums, historical societies, and zoos, of for private, not-for-profit archives that serve special interests, such as the Lesbian Herstory Archives in New York.
