Employment Prospects

Employers

Archakas are employed by Hindu temples, which are located throughout the world. The majority of Hindu temples are located in India. There are more than 200 Hindu temples in the United States.

Starting Out

Outside the United States, some archaka jobs are passed down from parent to child. In the U.S., Hindu temples advertise openings at their Web sites or on Hindu-oriented job sites. A list of Hindu temples in the United States can be found at https://www.deshvidesh.com/religious/list-of-hindu-temples-in-usa/.

Advancement Prospects

Serving as an archaka is a religious calling and, as such, most don’t aspire to advance in the manner in which many do in the Western world (i.e., more prestigious employer, higher salary, better benefits). On the other hand, an archaka in the United States may choose to work at a larger temple in order to serve more devotees or for other reasons not entirely tied to pay, prestige, or benefits (although some may take these issues into account when assessing job offers). Advancement may also come through increased wisdom and understanding of the religion.

Tips for Entry

Be willing to relocate to pursue job opportunities, which are best in large, metropolitan areas.

Talk to archakas about their careers. Ask them for advice on entering the profession.

Learn as much as you can about Hinduism.

Visit several Hindu temples to learn about various forms of worship, and to watch archakas as they lead services. Visit https://www.hinduismtoday.com/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=5315 for tips on visiting a temple and worship practices.
