About Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc
Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) operates under the auspices of its big city cousin, holding company
O&R and its two utility subsidiaries, Rockland Electric Company and Pike County Light & Power Co., deliver power and gas to customers in three states. The electricity O&R sold to its customers in 2011 was purchased under firm power contracts or through the wholesale electricity markets administered by the
The company serves a population of approximately 750,000 in seven counties in New York, northern New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania. About 75% of O&R's power customers are in the state of New York.
O&R's revenues increased by 5% in 2011, mainly due to lower purchased power costs and a decrease in gas purchased for resale.
As a way to attract more businesses to its New York service area, in 2011 O&R doubled the discount on its electric delivery rate (up from 10% to 20% for five years) for qualified companies.
The company is investing heavily in upgrading its aging infrastructure. In late 2010 the company announced plans to invest $2.6 million over a 13 month period to replace 11,800 feet of 60-year-old, 4-inch steel gas underground distribution pipe with 8-inch, plastic gas pipe across Orange and Rockland counties.
When deregulation arrived in O&R's territory in 1999, the energy company exited its power generation activities and sold itself to Con Edison.
