Net income has been moving with the company's revenues trend. In 2013 the company's net income increased to $210 million from $4 million in 2012 was primarily due to higher sales and increased operating income.
In 2013 BGE's operating cash inflow increased to $561 million over $485 million in 2012 was due to a decrease in payables to suppliers.
BGE focuses on enhancing reliability and customer satisfaction, and is implementing customer demand response initiatives, including a comprehensive smart grid initiative and a portfolio of conservation programs.
Since 2002, BGE has invested more than $3 billion to maintain and upgrade its gas and electric transmission and distribution systems to meet its customers' service and reliability needs. Its investments include improving infrastructure to reduce power outages, enhancing training to ensure a skilled workforce, and implementing a smart grid program to give customers and the company better control over energy use.
In 2013 the company filed a plan with the Maryland Public Service Commission to accelerate the modernization of its natural gas distribution system. BGE's Strategic Infrastructure Development and Enhancement plan responds to legislation signed into law on 2013, making Maryland one of more than 30 states with similar initiatives to modernize natural gas systems to enhance safety and reliability.
In 2012, BGE launched a three-year project to install Smart Meters (digital electric meters that allow two-way communication with BGE through a wireless network) for all of its residential and small commercial customers.
