About Archer-Daniels-Midland Company

Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) forges every link in the food chain from field to processing to store. One of the world's largest processors of agricultural commodities, the company converts corn, oilseeds, and wheat into products for food, animal feed, industrial, and energy uses at nearly 350 processing plants worldwide. The company is also a leading manufacturer of protein meal, vegetable oil, corn sweeteners, flour, biodiesel, ethanol, and other value-added food and feed ingredients. ADM operates an extensive US grain elevator and global transportation network that buys, stores, transports, and resells feed commodities for the agricultural processing industry, connecting crops with markets on six continents.

Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) conducts its business through three operating segments: Ag Services and Oilseeds, Carbohydrate Solutions, and Nutrition.

Ag Services and Oilseeds accounts for approximately three quarters of ADM's revenue and buys, stores, cleans, and transports agricultural commodities such as oilseeds, corn, wheat, milo, oats, rice, and barley. It resells them as food and feed ingredients and as raw materials for the agriculture processing industry. Oilseeds products produced and marketed by the segment include ingredients for food, feed, energy, and industrial customers.

The Carbohydrate Solutions segment accounts for 15% of sales, is engaged in corn and wheat wet and dry milling and other activities. It carries out corn wet and dry milling to convert corn into sweeteners, starches, syrups, glucose, dextrose, and bioproducts. It also ferments dextrose to produce alcohol and other food and animal feed ingredients

Nutrition segment brings in the remaining revenue and produces natural flavor ingredients, flavor systems, natural colors, proteins, emulsifiers, and soluble fiber, among other specialty products. Additionally, it buys, processes, and sells edible beans and soy proteins.

A big part of ADM's business is getting products from one place to another. It has developed a comprehensive transportation network that moves commodities and processed products around the world. It owns or leases approximately 1,900 barges, 11,900 rail cars, 330 trucks, 1,300 trailers, 90 boats, and seven oceangoing vessels; and leases, under operating leases, approximately 610 barges, 16,900 rail cars, 320 trucks, 280 trailers, 40 boats, and nearly 20 oceangoing vessels.

Financial Performance

Archer-Daniels-Midland's revenue rose after the consecutive decreases in 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2019, revenues increased $315 million to $64.7 billion due to overall higher sales volumes ($3.2 billion), partially offset by lower sales prices ($2.9 billion). The increase in sales volumes was due principally to soybeans, wheat, cotton, and higher sales volumes of feed ingredients related to acquisitions.

In 2019, Net income fell 24% to $1.4 billion from $1.8 billion the previous year.

Cash at the end of 2019 totaled $3 billion, an $853 million decrease from the previous year. Operating activities used $5.5 billion while investing activities generated $5.3 billion. Financing activities used another $660 million.

The company's strategy involves expanding the volume and diversity of crops that it merchandises and processes, expanding the global reach of its core model, and expanding its value-added product portfolio. One of ADM's strategies is to expand the global reach of its core model may include expanding or developing its business in emerging market areas such as Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. As the company adds new products to its portfolio, it is keeps an eye on operations that fail to meet expectations.

One of the Company's strategies is to expand the global reach of its core model, which may include expanding or developing its business in emerging market areas. Both developed and emerging market areas are subject to impacts of economic downturns, including decreased demand for the Company's products, and reduced availability of credit, or declining credit quality of the Company's suppliers, customers, and other counterparties.

The Company's strategy also involves expanding the volume and diversity of crops it merchandises and processes, expanding the global reach of its core model, and expanding its value-added product portfolio. Government policies including, but not limited to, antitrust and competition law, trade restrictions, food safety regulations, sustainability requirements, and traceability, can impact the Company's ability to execute this strategy successfully.
