About Archer-Daniels-Midland Company

Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) forges every link in the food chain from field to processing to store. One of the world's largest processors of agricultural commodities, the company converts corn, oilseeds, and wheat into products for food, animal feed, industrial, and energy uses at 280 processing plants worldwide. The company is also a leading manufacturer of protein meal, vegetable oil, corn sweeteners, flour, biodiesel, ethanol, and other value-added food and feed ingredients. ADM operates an extensive US grain elevator and global transportation network that buys, stores, transports, and resells feed commodities for the agricultural processing industry, connecting crops with markets on six continents.

Operations

Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) conducts its business through four operating segments: Agricultural Services, Corn Processing, Oilseeds Processing, and Wild Flavors and Specialty Ingredients.

Agricultural Services accounts for nearly half of ADM's revenue and buys, stores, cleans, and transports agricultural commodities such as oilseeds, corn, wheat, milo, oats, rice, and barley. It resells them as food and feed ingredients and as raw materials for the agriculture processing industry.

The Oilseeds segment generates nearly 45% of sales and processes soybeans and soft seeds (such as cottonseeds, sunflower seeds, canola, rapeseed, and flaxseed) into vegetable oils and protein meals. Vegetable oils are either sold as raw oils or further refined into salad oils or hydrogenated into margarine and shortening. Partly refined oils are also turned into biodiesel or sold to other manufacturers for use in industrial applications such as paint and chemicals. The protein meals are typically used as a food for livestock, particularly poultry. In Europe and South America, the segment operates "grain elevators" (storage facilities), port facilities, and transport assets.

The Corn Processing segment accounts for 15% of sales and carries out corn wet and dry milling to convert corn into sweeteners, starches, syrups, glucose, dextrose, and bioproducts. The bulk of its operations are in the mid-US, but it also has operations in China, Bulgaria, Morocco, and Turkey. It also ferments dextrose to produce alcohol and amino acids.

Wild Flavors and Specialty Ingredients brings in most of the remaining revenue and produces natural flavor ingredients, flavor systems, natural colors, proteins, emulsifiers, and soluble fiber, among other specialty products. Additionally, it buys, processes, and sells edible beans and soy proteins; it also sells gluten-free and high-protein pastas.

In total, ADM has 271 owned or leased, US or non-US processing plants and 514 owned or leased, US or non-US procurement facilities.

A big part of ADM's business is getting products from one place to another. It has developed a comprehensive transportation network that moves commodities and processed products around the world. It owns or leases thousands of trucks, trailers, railroad tank and hopper cars, river barges, towboats, and ocean-going vessels.

Geographic Reach

The US is Archer-Daniels-Midlands's largest market, accounting for more than 45% of total sales. Switzerland accounts for more than 20% and Germany around 5%. More than 160 other countries contribute the rest. ADM currently owns or leases 270 processing plants and more than 510 procurement facilities, 25% of which are located outside of the US.

The company also has 230 warehouses and terminals primarily used as bulk storage facilities and around 40 innovation centers.

ADM has Agricultural Services processing plants in North America and Europe; Agricultural Services procurement facilities in North America, South America, and Europe; Corn Processing plants in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Oilseeds processing plants in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa; Oilseeds Processing procurement facilities in North America, South America, and Europe; and Wild Flavors and Specialty Ingredients operations in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Sales and Marketing

Archer-Daniels-Midland's products are distributed mainly in bulk from processing plants or storage facilities directly to customers' facilities. ADM has developed transportation capability to move both commodities and processed products virtually anywhere in the world.

Financial Performance

Archer-Daniels-Midland's revenue has declined steadily since 2013. In fiscal 2016 revenue fell a further 8% to $62.3 billion, mostly because of lower average sales prices and the disposal of the sugar ethanol and cocoa businesses, partially offset by contributions from acquisitions.

Net income fell 30% to $1.3 billion due to gains recorded in the previous year on the sale of the cocoa and chocolate business and lower earnings in fiscal 2016 due to their sale. The company also recorded lower global crushing and origination margins and lower international merchandising results.

Cash from operations fell by $1 billion to $1.5 billion due to changes in working capital.

Strategy

To stay abreast of changes in consumer tastes, Archer-Daniels-Midland made a number of acquisitions in the gluten-free and high-protein space. Acquisitions include Harvest Innovations (minimally processed soy proteins and gluten-free ingredients) and Caterina Foods (gluten-free and high-protein pastas), integrated into the Wild Flavors segment.

The company's strategy involves expanding the volume and diversity of crops that it merchandises and processes, expanding the global reach of its core model, and expanding its value-added product portfolio. One of ADM's strategies is to expand the global reach of its core model may include expanding or developing its business in emerging market areas such as Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. As the company adds new products to its portfolio, it is keeps an eye on operations that fail to meet expectations. To that end, in 2016 ADM sold its sugarcane ethanol operations in Limeira do Oeste, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, and the year before that it sold its cocoa and chocolate business as well.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In early 2017 Archer-Daniels-Midland acquired Crosswind Industries, a manufacturer of private label pet treats and foods, as well as specialty ingredients.

The company made a number of acquisitions in 2016. In February it acquired Harvest Innovations, an industry leader in minimally processed, expeller-pressed soy proteins, oils, and gluten-free ingredients) for $84 million. In April it bought a 50% interest in Egyptian firm Medsofts Group that manages merchandising and supply chain operations; in September, Caterina Foods, a maker of gluten-free and high-protein pastas; and in May the remaining 60% interest in Amazon Flavors, a Brazilian manufacturer of natural extracts, emulsions, and compounds. It also agreed to acquire from Tate & Lyle a Casablanca, Morocco-based corn wet mill that produces glucose and native starch.
