About Airbnb, Inc.

Airbnb wants travelers to spend time "living" in the places they travel to rather than simply visiting. Unlike hotel accommodations, Airbnb is one of the world's largest marketplaces for unique, authentic places to stay and things to do, offering over 7 million accommodations and tens of thousands of handcrafted activities, all powered by local hosts.. Rentals can range from modest apartments in urban areas to castles in the countryside; other accommodations include houses and villas. Airbnb operates in more than 100,000 cities and towns in over 220 countries around the world. The service, which boasts more than seven million listings, provides a convenient way for homeowners to monetize their residential properties. Founded in 2008, Airbnb offers a simple user interface that can be used online or from a mobile phone or tablet.

Sales and Marketing

An average of two million number of people were staying on Airbnb per night in 2019 and approximately 750 million Airbnb guest arrivals all-time.

Strategy

Airbnb has entered into various partnerships in recent years, such as its special collaboration with LoveFrom for a multi-year relationship to design the next generation of Airbnb products and services. Airbnb Experiences and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) also partnered to co-promote and grow a range of unique, authentic Airbnb Experiences hosted by passionate locals on the Airbnb Experiences platform.

In recent years, Airbnb has leveraged its success to make acquisitions and expand beyond its short-term vacation rental business. In 2019 the company made two acquisitions to bolster its services to business customers: Danish startup Gaest, a platform facilitating hourly and daily meeting space bookings throughout Europe; and Urbandoor, which provides furnished and serviced apartments to business professionals who are on extended business trips or relocating.

Airbnb is also seeking to ramp up its competition with hotel groups with its acquisition of HotelTonight, a platform offering last-minute hotel bookings of available rooms in urban areas saturated with large inventories of unused hotel rooms.

Aside from these partnerships and acquisitions, Airbnb also launched City Portal, a first-of-its-kind solution, built exclusively for governments and tourism organizations that includes tools and locally-specific data for a deeper partnership with Airbnb. City Portal's technology directly connects the Airbnb platform with governments and tourism organizations to provide them with the City Portal's dashboard; industry-first compliance tools; a central location for resources; and direct access via City Portal to an Airbnb team member.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In mid-2019, Airbnb acquires California-based, Urbandoor a global online marketplace where professionals can easily find furnished and serviced apartments tailored to their needs for extended business trips, relocations, and other longer-term stays. Airbnb's acquisition of Urbandoor builds on the solutions Airbnb offers multifamily housing owners and operators. Urbandoor already provides multifamily property owners and operators access to demand for longer stays, and by joining Airbnb they'll work to ensure multifamily owners and operators have increased access to long-term demand to increase yield and returns — all while improving the guest experience.

In early 2019, HotelTonight and Airbnb announced that the acquisition bringing the two companies together has closed. Airbnb is working to reimagine travel by building an end-to-end travel platform that combines where you stay, what you do, and how you get there, all in one place. HotelTonight is a hotel-booking service focused on making last-minute trips easy and fun, offering travelers seamless, on-demand booking for boutique and independent hotels. Together, HotelTonight and Airbnb will offer guests more choices and make it easier for the world's best boutique and independent hotels to connect with Airbnb's global network of guests.
