About Airbnb, Inc.

Airbnb wants travelers to spend time "living" in the places they travel to rather than simply visiting. Unlike hotel accommodations, Airbnb helps travelers book short-term vacation properties from local hosts (typically the property owners) with the goal of experiencing a destination as if travelers actually lived there. Rentals can range from modest apartments in urban areas to castles in the countryside; other accommodations include houses and villas. Airbnb operates in more than 100,000 cities and towns in 190 countries around the world. The service, which boasts more than six million listings, provides a convenient way for homeowners to monetize their residential properties. Founded in 2008, Airbnb offers a simple user interface that can be used online or from a mobile phone or tablet.

Strategy

Airbnb has had room to grow since its founding in 2008, when it was one of few companies operating in the then-new vacation home rental industry. (Its main vacation rental competitor, HomeAway, was founded just a few years before.) In less than 10 years the company has positioned itself as a dominant player in the industry. 

In recent years Airbnb has leveraged its success to make acquisitions and expand beyond its short-term vacation rental business. In 2019 the company made two acquisitions to bolster its services to business customers: Danish startup Gaest, a platform facilitating hourly and daily meeting space bookings throughout Europe; and Urbandoor, which provides furnished and serviced apartments to business professionals who are on extended business trips or relocating. 

Airbnb is also seeking to ramp up its competition with hotel groups with its acquisition of HotelTonight, a platform offering last-minute hotel bookings of available rooms in urban areas saturated with large inventories of unused hotel rooms. 

The company's success hasn't been entirely without resistance, however, as Airbnb has been at the center of many lawsuits with major cities pushing back against short-term rentals. Many cities have enacted legislation, and even outright bans, designed to restrict short-term vacation rentals, which are believed by some to drive up home prices and saturate neighborhoods with vacation rental properties. Noteworthy cities with restrictions include Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, France, and Amsterdam, all of which limit the days each year hosts can rent out their properties for short-term vacation use. Because Airbnb collects a cut from its hosts' bookings, fewer available rental days in these and other cities translates to less revenue for the company. Airbnb's investments in serving business professionals is integral to diversifying its business, which will help it mitigate the effects of emerging constraints in its traditional short-term vacation rental business.
