NAST generates about 65% of revenue and provides freight transportation services—mainly truckload, LTL, and intermodal services—across North America through a network of offices in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Robinson Fresh (20%) provides sourcing services including the buying, selling, and marketing of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other perishables. This segment also provides the logistics and transportation for the products it sells in addition to temperature-controlled transportation services for its customers. Global Forwarding (15%) provides global logistics services through an international network of offices and independent agents worldwide. Global Forwarding offers ocean freight, air freight, and customs brokerage services.

Financial Performance

After an uncharacteristic 2% drop in revenue in 2016, C.H. Robinson's sales increase to a record high of $14.9 billion in 2017. CHRW saw volume and price increases in all of its service lines, but higher transportation costs negatively impacted profit margins. Profits decreased by about 2% to $504.9 million in 2017 compared with $513.4 million in 2016.

Cash at the end of fiscal 2017 was $333.9 million, an increase of $86.2 million from the prior year. Cash from operations contributed $384.0 million to the coffers, while investing activities used $107.5 million, including $49 million for the acquisition of Milgram & Company Ltd. Financing activities used another $202.1 million for dividends to stockholders and the company's stock repurchase program.

Strategy

C.H. Robinson is currently focused on a digital transformation initiative. It continues to make investments in its Navishpere digital platform aimed at further automating processes and transactions. The company has developed and launched hundreds of new features and enhancements to the Navisphere platform to improve its ability to match the demand of shippers and the supply of carriers using advanced algorithms. Leveraging the data from its millions of global shipments, CHRW is working to improve the visibility and transparency of supply chains, enable real time collaboration, and provide sophisticated predictive analytics.

The company also looks to expand its market opportunities through strategic acquisitions. Its 2017 acquisition of Milgram & Company has increased its footprint within its global forwarding business in Canada.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In 2017, CHRW purchased Milgram & Company Ltd., a leading provider of customs brokerage and freight forwarding, for $50 million in cash. The acquisition strengthens the company’s freight forwarding and customs brokerage offerings in Canada. Milgram operates primarily within the Global Forwarding segment.

Company Background

C.H. Robinson traces its roots to the early 1900s when Charles H. Robinson began a produce brokerage in Grand Forks, ND. Robinson entered a partnership in 1905 with Nash Brothers, the leading wholesaler in North Dakota, and the company C.H. Robinson was born.

With the development of the interstate highway system and refrigerated trucks after WWII, the company was no longer dependent on railroads and began charging for truck brokerage of perishables. As part of its overall effort to become a full-service provider, C.H. Robinson formed its intermodal division in 1988 and ventured overseas with the launch of its international division in 1989. It entered Mexico in 1990 and added air freight operations and international freight forwarding services opening offices in Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela.

The company went public in 1997 and became C.H. Robinson Worldwide (CHRW).
