About Kelly Services, Inc.

One of the biggest staffing firms in the US, Kelly Services provides temporary employees to companies operating in the light industrial, technical, and professional sectors, including information technology specialists, marketers, and accountants. It also places engineers (through Kelly Engineering Resources), scientists (Kelly Scientific Resources), substitute teachers (Kelly Educational Staffing), and government personnel (Kelly Government Solutions). Overall, Kelly assigns some 500,000 temporary employees around the world each year. Some 70% of revenue is generated in the US.

Operations

Kelly operates through three segments: Americas Staffing (about 45% of the company's revenue), Global Talent Solutions (more than 35%), and International Staffing (about 20%).

Americas Staffing provides temporary staffing, as well as direct-hire placement services, in jobs that include education, marketing, electronic assembly, light industrial, science, engineering, information technology, creative services, finance, and accounting. Kelly's Global Talent Solutions business offers outsourcing and consulting services; executive placement, career transition, and talent advisory are other Global Talent services.

The company's International Staffing segment offers a similar range of staffing services in overseas markets.

Geographic Reach

The US is Kelly's primary market, accounting for more than 70% of total revenue. The remaining 30% is derived from operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and the Asia/Pacific region. Kelly is based in Troy, Michigan.

Sales and Marketing

Kelly Services' customer roster includes a diverse range of companies from local and mid-sized businesses to the FORTUNE 500. Its 100 largest customers account for more than 50% of revenue, and its top customer accounts for nearly 5% of its revenue. The company also provides staffing for government agencies; none account for more than 3% of revenue.

Financial Performance

Kelly Services' revenue has fluctuated over the past five years, hitting a high point in 2014 when the company reported nearly $5.6 billion in revenue and dipping to $5.2 billion in 2016. Kelly's revenue has made modest gains in subsequent years.

In 2018 revenue ticked 2% higher to $5.5 billion from $5.3 billion in 2017. Increases in revenue in Kelly's Americas Staffing and International Staffing businesses were offset by a slight decline in revenue in its Global Talent Solutions business.

The company's net income dropped to $22.9 million in 2018 from $71.6 million in 2017, due in part to a loss on its investment in Persol Holdings.

Total cash on hand at the end of 2018 increased $3.2 million to $40.1 million. Cash flow from operations added $61.4 million, while investing activities used $29.8 million for investment in its PersolKelly Asia Pacific business and Business Talent Group, LLC. Financing activities used $26.5 million, mostly to repay debt.

Strategy

Kelly Services' growth strategy centers on evolving its staff of temporary employees to serve its large corporate customer base. To that end, the company pursues acquisitions as a way to acquire temp workers with skill sets relevant to current industry needs. Kelly has historically targeted small specialty employment services firms serving technology, telecom, and other fast-changing industries; in 2019 it acquired Global Technology Associates (engineering and technology consulting) and NextGen Global Resources (telecom staffing). The acquisitions bolster Kelly's engineering staffing services for companies in the telecom industry, particularly those in the growing 5G technology space.

Kelly also divests non-core assets to generate capital and focus resources newer service offerings. In 2019 the company sold its Kelly Legal Managed Services unit as well as its healthcare specialty business. The sales of both units reduced its legacy legal and healthcare staffing services.

The company is a significant player in the US temporary staffing market, but it also invests in expansion in overseas markets. It operates in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region and in Asia through a joint venture with the Persol Holdings staffing firm. The company routinely invests in its non-US affiliates and is leaning on its joint venture investment, PersolKelly Asia Pacific, to Kelly establish a permanent presence in emerging markets in Asia.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In early 2019 Kelly acquired Global Technology Associates, an engineering, technology, and business consulting services firm, and telecom staffing firm NextGen Global Resources. The two acquisitions bolster Kelly's engineering staffing services for companies operating in the telecom industry, particularly those in the growing 5G technology space.

Company Background

William Russell Kelly, a college dropout and former car salesman, went to Detroit after WWII to seek his fortune. An owner of modern business equipment, he set up Russell Kelly Office Service in 1946 to provide copying, typing, and inventory services for other businesses; first-year sales from 12 customers totaled $848.

Although companies began to acquire their own machines, Kelly knew that they still needed people to work at their offices. He reincorporated his rapidly expanding business as Personnel Service in 1952 and opened the company's first branch office in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1955; by the end of that year, he had 35 offices throughout the US. In 1957 the company was renamed Kelly Girl Service to reflect its all-female workforce.

In the 1960s Kelly ventured beyond office services and began placing convention hostesses, blue-collar workers, data processors, door-to-door marketers, and drafters, among others. Kelly Girl went public in 1962, boasting 148 branches at the time. In 1966 the company adopted the name Kelly Services. It opened its first non-US office in Toronto in 1968, and one in Paris followed in 1972.
