About Ado Staffing, Inc.

Any way you stack it, Adecco is the world's largest employment agency, serving more than 100,000 clients from more than 5,000 offices worldwide. The bulk of Adecco's business is providing temporary office (clerical and support staff) and blue-collar workers under the brands Adecco and Adia. The company also operates several professional staffing businesses, including Badenoch + Clark, Modis, Spring Professional, Vettery, and Yoss, which source IT, engineering and technical, finance and legal, and medical and science staff. Adecco does most of its business in Europe, particularly France, but it has operations globally. Pontoon is Adecco's HR outsourcing business, fulfilling an organization's staffing needs. Adecco traces its roots to 1957 and has a history of growing through mergers and acquisitions.

Adecco provides staffing services under four categories: temporary staffing, permanent placement, career transition, and outsourcing.

Temporary staffing is by far the company's largest operation at more than 85% of sales. Adecco's Pontoon brand provides HR outsourcing, handling all a company's staffing requirements, and generates 10% of sales. Permanent placement services account for 2% of sales and career transition 1%.

By industry sector, Adecco's Workforce Solutions business sources staff for general office and industrial settings under the brands Adecco and Adia. Adia provides on-demand staff, mainly for the hospitality and events industry. Workforce Solutions generates three-quarters of sales.

Professional Staffing & Solutions fills vacancies in the IT, Engineering & Technical, Finance & Legal, and Medical & Science sectors. It trades under five brands: Badenoch + Clark (generalist), Modis (IT and engineering), Spring (IT), Vettery (tech, sales, and finance), and Yoss (tech).

Geographic Reach

Zurich, Switzerland-based Adecco operates in 60 countries. France is its largest market, accounting for about a quarter of total sales, while North America generates nearly 20% of sales. Adecco also trades in most countries in Western, Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe, as well as Japan, India, the MENA region, and Australasia, none of which account for more than 10% of sales.

Sales and Marketing

Adecco counts more than 100,000 businesses as customers.

Financial Performance

Note: Growth rates may differ after conversion to US Dollars.

Adecco has grown its revenue in each of the last three years. Weakening demand in most European markets and unfavorable exchange rate effects meant Adecco's revenue growth in 2018 slowed to less than 1%, reaching €23.9 billion. The best performing markets were France, Italy, and Japan. Growth was concentrated in the small Permanent Staffing business, which grew 15%; temporary staffing revenue was flat.

Net income in 2018 reduced 42% to €460 million as selling, general, and administrative expenses grew faster than revenue, up 5%. The increase related to growth in the permanent placements business, investments in strategic initiatives, and integration costs relating to the acquired General Assembly and Vettery businesses.

Adecco's cash position weakened by €285 million during 2018, ending the year at €718 million. It generated €727 million from its operations, while investing activities used €344 million and its financing activities used €682 million. The company's main cash uses were capital expenditures, acquisitions, long-term debt repayments, and dividend payouts. The net effect of two acquisitions and the sale of a stake in Beeline meant net debt increased 25% to €1.0 billion.

With profits and revenue growth stagnating, Adecco is finding ways to adapt to two key shifts in the labor market: on-demand, flexible working and a talent gap between what the market needs in terms of skills and what is available. By solving these problems, Adecco will become more valuable to its clients and generate higher margin business. In 2018 the company made two acquisitions -- General Assembly and Vettery -- that provide online staffing, digital permanent recruitment, and up/re-skilling, which it hopes will give its financials a shot in the arm.

Adecco is also investing in technology to increase the efficiency of its internal operations, including deploying robotic process automation and chatbots.

Mergers and Acquisitions

Adecco made two acquisitions in 2018. First it acquired Vettery, a recruitment startup with a digital focus based in New York. Then, Adecco acquired General Assembly, an early-stage education business also based in New York, for $412.5 million. General Assembly runs courses to upskill workers to equip them for the modern economy from some 20 offices worldwide.
