The stores range from 8,000 to 71,000 sq. ft. Weis Markets was established in 1912 by Harry and Sigmund Weis in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. The Weis family still controls about 65% of the company's voting power.

Center Store products, which include groceries, dairy products, frozen foods, beer and wine, and health/beauty and household items, generate more than 55% of Weis Market's revenue; the rest comes from Fresh Foods (some 30%), Pharmacy Services (nearly 10%), and Fuel (about 5%).

The company relies on its own distribution operations for about 65% of merchandise with the rest coming directly from vendors.

Overall, the company generates over 85% of its revenue from groceries.

Financial Performance

Fueled by acquisitions, Weis has seen steady revenue growth over the past few years with sales up 23% since 2015. Net income has also been on an upward trend but dropped in 2018.

In 2019 the company reported revenue of $3.5 billion, up 1% from the prior year. Its pharmacy products contributed the most to its growth.

Net income rose 8% to $68.0 million compared to $62.7 million of the previous year. The increase was due to higher revenue.

Cash at the end of 2019 was $66.9 million, an increase of $29.1 million from the prior year. Cash from operations contributed $171.4 million to the coffers, while investing activities used $109.3 million, mainly for capital expenditures. Financing activities used another $33.4 million for dividends to stockholders and payments on long-term debt.

Weis Markets' strategic imperatives include: Establishing a Sales Driven Culture; Building and Supporting Human Capital; Becoming More Relevant to Consumers; Creating Meaningful Differentiation; Developing and Aligning Organizational Capabilities; and Focusing on Sustainability Strategies.
