About Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.

One name strikes fear in the hearts of supermarket owners in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Massachusetts: Wegmans Food Markets. The regional grocery chain owns about 105 stores, but they are hardly typical. Much larger than most supermarkets (up to 140,000 sq. ft.), each store offers up to 70,000 products and house huge in-store cafes, cheese shops with hundreds of different varieties, sub shops, and French-style pastry shops. Aside from food products, it also houses health and beauty care shops, housewares and seasonal merchandise shops, floral shops, and pharmacies. Founded in 1916, Wegmans now boasts revenues of over $9.7 billion and is one of the largest private companies in the US. The grocery chain is owned and run by the family of founder John Wegman.

Operations

Wegmans' operations are divided into eight departments: Produce, which offers fresh and organic vegetables from its neighboring farms; Meat, which offers fresh cuts of beef, pork, and chicken, as well as oven-ready meat-and veggie entrĂ©es; Seafood, which takes care of various fish and other seafood offerings; Bakery, which includes products such as whole grain breads, desserts, and breakfast treats; Wine, Beer and Spirits, offering more than 700 varieties; Cheese, with hundreds of cheeses, including nearly 15 organic cheeses; Prepared foods which offers Asian foods, pizza and wings, prepared meals, salad, subs and sandwiches, sushi and soups;  Other Departments offers bulk foods, pet supplies, health and wellness, and household essentials, among others.

Strategy

Four months after opening in Brooklyn, Wegmans Food Markets is now offering grocery delivery to Manhattan residents with the help of delivery provider, Instacart. With major investments in e-commerce like its new website and app, the timing couldn't be better to make ordering favorite Wegmans brand products and fresh foods available for delivery to Manhattan. With the expanded radius, delivery is now available to all Manhattan zip codes. To accommodate the longer drive times, delivery to Manhattan addresses often requires longer delivery windows, ranging between two and five hours.

In partnership with Instacart, it has seen tremendous growth and success with its online grocery shopping and delivery services. It represents a growing percentage of its sales, and with larger delivery radiuses, it was able to reach more customers in New York, and other markets where traffic and transportation prohibit customers from coming to the stores.
