About Wegmans Food Markets, Inc.
One name strikes fear in the hearts of supermarket owners in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Massachusetts: Wegmans Food Markets. The regional grocery chain owns about 100 stores, but they are hardly typical. Much larger than most supermarkets (up to 140,000 sq. ft.), each store offers up to 70,000 products and house huge in-store cafes, cheese shops with hundreds of different varieties , sub shops, and French-style pastry shops. Aside from food products, it also houses health and beauty care shops, housewares and seasonal merchandise shops, floral shops, and pharmacies. Founded in 1916, Wegmans now boasts revenues of over $9 billion and is one of the largest private companies in the US. The grocery chain is owned and run by the family of founder John Wegman.
Wegmans' operations are divided into ten departments: Produce, which offers fresh and organic vegetables from its neighboring farms; Meat, which offers fresh cuts of beef, pork, and chicken, as well as oven-ready meat-and veggie entrées; Seafood, which takes care of various fish and other seafood offerings; Bakery, which includes products such as whole grain breads, desserts, and breakfast treats; Market Café, which offers take-out or in-store dining, with seating for 100 to upwards of 300; Restaurants, offering entrees, soups, appetizers, gourmet sandwiches, and side dishes; Beer, offering about 700 varieties; Wine, a large selection; Cheese, with hundreds of cheeses, including some 30 organic cheeses; and Floral, which offers an array of seasonally fresh flowers and plants for home décor and for any occasion.
Rochester, New York-based Wegmans Food Markets operates more than 45 of its about 100 stores in its home state. Pennsylvania is next with over 15 stores. The rest of its stores are in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Massachusetts.
Wegmans' annual sales in 2018 were $9.2 billion.
Wegmans has been entering new markets in recent years to boost sales. The chain opened its first North Carolina location in Raleigh in 2019, with plans for five additional stores in the Raleigh-Durham area. Wegmans debuted its first New York City store in Brooklyn in late 2019.
The upscale regional grocery chain, which aims to deliver a shopping experience more akin to a European open-air market than a traditional supermarket, has also benefited from the recovering US economy. Key to Wegmans' success is its competitive pricing, mostly on its popular private-label products. The retailer's aggressive private-label strategy includes frequent product updates and innovation.
The company has also been expanding its curbside grocery pickup and delivery options to meet growing customer demand. Adding meals to go, Wegmans partnered with DoorDash in 2019 to deliver the supermarket's popular meals via the Wegmans Meals 2GOP app. Customers can also use the app for meal carryout or curbside pickup.
Wegmans ranked 28th on the 2019 Supermarket News list of Top 75 Supermarkets based on sales volume. The chain is not only popular with shoppers, but also with employees. The company has landed on FORTUNE magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For," for the past 22 years and captured the #3 spot in 2019.
