About The Golub Corporation
Supermarket operator The Golub Corporation offers tasty come-ons such as table-ready meals, gift certificates, automatic discount cards, and a hotline where cooks answer food-related queries. Golub operates about 135 Price Chopper supermarkets and market 32 stores in six states in the northeastern US (New York is its largest market.) About 80 of the locations have in-store pharmacies and some New York stores provide shopping and delivery service through the Shops4U program. The founding Golub family runs the company and owns about 45% of the regional grocery chain; employees own slightly more than 45%.
Golub's Price Chopper chain is active in six US states. New York accounts for more than 60% of its locations, while Massachusetts and Vermont each contribute more than 10%. It also has locations in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.
Sales and Marketing
The company sells its products in its stores and online.
While privately-held Golub doesn't publish sales results for its Price Chopper chain, its supermarkets ring up an estimated $3.5 billion in annual revenues.
Golub continues to invest in its future through new locations, improved products and services, customer engagement and health and wellness initiatives, environmental sustainability activities, progressive technology, digital marketing, e-commerce, and social networking.
In 2015, Price Chopper Supermarkets launched a specialty pharmacy program with Aureus Health Services, a specialty pharmacy and health management company.
In 2014, the company announced plans to rebrand about 135 Price Chopper supermarkets under a new banner, Market 32. The conversions will take place over the next several years. More than half of the conversions will be completed within five years, representing a $300 million investment. The renamed stores will will include expanded food service options, an enhanced product mix, and an emphasis on customer service. The new name references 1932, the year the company was founded.
In late 2013 Golub invested some $10 million to relaunch a Latham, New York, store as Market Bistro by Price Chopper. The 87,000-square-foot revamped location features a New York-style deli, pizza counter, cooking classes, and indoor and outdoor patios.
Like many other retailers, the company is experimenting with new formats. In May 2012 it opened its first small-format store, known as Price Chopper Limited. The 19,000-square-foot store (about a third of the size of a typical Price Chopper supermarket) is located in a residential neighborhood in downtown Saratoga Springs, New York. The "Limited" store offers an edited selection of Price Chopper's most popular products, a bakery, full-service meat, deli, and seafood departments, and a cafe with eat-in or take-out meals.
In fall 2011 Price Chopper launched a new online ordering and home delivery program called Price Chopper Shops4U . The service charges a service fee of $10, with an additional $6 fee for delivery. Customers can either pick up their orders at the store or have them delivered.
Brothers Bill and Ben Golub founded the company in 1932.
