About Schnuck Markets, Inc.

Schnuck Markets is one of the largest grocery store operators in the Midwestern US, as well as one of the nation's largest privately owned companies. It has about 125 Schnucks stores, mostly in the St. Louis, Missouri, area, but also in a handful of other states. All stores offer a full line of groceries and most of them boast pharmacies. Other services include Redbox video rentals, in-store banking, Rug Doctor carpet cleaning rentals, and florist shops, as well as delivery through Instacart. Founded in 1939, the company is owned and run by the Schnuck family.

Operations

Schnuck Markets locations offer full-service grocery products through traditional departments such as bakery, deli, floral, meat and seafood, produce, and wine and beer. In addition, more than 90% of stores include pharmacies. Other services available at select locations include Redbox video rentals, CoinMax machines, MoneyGram payment services, Rug Doctor carpet cleaning rentals, grocery delivery through Instacart, in-store banking, blood pressure screening kiosks, and restaurants and prepared food bars.

Geographic Reach

Schnuck Markets operates in five states, with most locations in Missouri around St. Louis; other markets include Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Strategy

As is the case with most companies in the competitive grocery industry, Schnuck Markets is focused on expanding its services for customers and leveraging technology.

It partnered with delivery service Instacart in 2017 to provide grocery delivery in the St. Louis market; the program, Schnucks Delivers, is now available in all geographic markets served by the company. In late 2018 it introduced curbside pickup at four St. Louis area stores, with plans for an additional four in early 2019 and more throughout the year. Also in 2018 Schnuck Markets debuted a rewards program that gives points for every dollar spent on qualifying purchases.

On the technology side, Schnuck Markets in late 2018 rolled out autonomous self-scanning robots in some 15 stores to monitor and report shelf data and improve product stocking and organization.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In late 2018 Schnuck Markets purchased 19 Shop 'n Save stores (14 in Missouri and five in Illinois) from SUPERVALU. The deal further solidifies Schnuck's leadership in the St. Louis market.

Company Background

Edwin Schnuck started a wholesale meat business in 1937. Two years later, the family's first retail store was opened. Other stores soon opened, and the Schnuck families (parents and adult children) owned seven stores by 1947. The stores were eventually combined into one business, Schnuck Markets, which grew organically and through acquisitions over the decades to include more than 100 locations.
