About Raley's

Raley's has to stock plenty of fresh fruit and great wines -- it sells to the people that produce them. The company operates about 130 supermarkets and superstores in California and Nevada. In addition to about 80 flagship Raley's Superstores, the company operates about 20 Bel Air Markets (in the Sacramento area) and Nob Hill Foods (an upscale Bay Area chain with some 20 locations). Raley's stores typically offer groceries, natural foods, and liquor, as well as in-store pharmacies. Founded during the Depression by Thomas Porter Raley, the company is still owned  and run by the Raley family.

Operations

In addition to Raley's, Bel Air, and Nob Hill supermarkets, Raley's operates nearly 10 discount warehouse stores under the Food Source banner in Northern California and Nevada and one Market 5-ONE-5 neighborhood market in downtown Sacramento. The company offers online shopping and delivery in some markets.

Geographic Reach

Raley's approximately 130 stores are located primarily in Central and Northern California, with a cluster around its headquarters city of Sacramento. It has about 20 locations in Nevada.

Strategy

Raley's strategy is centered around providing health, fresh food at affordable prices. To that end, in late 2018 it divested its Aisle 1 fuel stations, which are adjacent to Raley's supermarkets, to focus on core operations. It has also launched new products to appeal to changing tastes for healthy, natural foods and prepared meals, including a line of chef-created fresh meal kits vegetable sides (introduced in late 2018). Earlier in 2018 the company removed soda and candy from its check-out stands, reducing its overall sugar offerings by 25%.

Raley's has also invested in technology to better serve customers and in 2018 launched a new website and campaign to promote online shopping and introduced a pharmacy mobile app.

Company Background

Raley's traces its roots to Placerville, California, and the 1935 opening of a grocery store by Tom Raley. The company has grown organically and through acquisitions; it acquired Bel Air Markets in 1992 and Nob Hill Foods in 1998. It remains family-owned.
