About Oxford Industries, Inc.

No longer all buttoned up, Oxford has embraced the island life. It's a top US maker of brand name and private-label clothing, including golf attire, as well as a retailer in the US and UK. Its Tommy Bahama unit makes branded men's and women's sportswear and related products and owns more than 160 stores and restaurants in the US. Lanier Clothes offers men's suits, sportcoats, and slacks under such brands as Dockers, Nick Graham, and Kenneth Cole. Oxford's customers include national and regional specialty stores, direct retailers, and department stores. Virtually all of Oxford's sales comes from the US.

Operations

The company primarily operates through Tommy Bahama, Lilly Pulitzer, Lanier Clothes and Southern Tide. With annual sales of nearly two-third of Oxford's total sales Tommy Bahama is the company's cash cow. That unit specializes in men's and women's relaxed sportswear, targeting affluent customers age 35 and older. Dainty Lily Pulitzer, generate roughly 25% of sales, The brand markets its collections to women and girls, with more of a younger slant. Lanier Clothes, which produces tailored and casual men's apparel under license and private-label products, contributes about 10%. Southern Tide markets and distributes high-quality apparel bearing the distinctive Skipjack logo generate about 5% of sales.

In addition to apparel manufacturing, Oxford's Tommy Bahama and Lily Pulitzer brands operate company-owned retail and outlet stores -- 224 doors in all. The shops are concentrated in Florida and California. There are also more than 15 Tommy Bahama-branded restaurants adjacent to Tommy Bahama retail shops.

The company's retail sales account for around 40% of sales, wholesale accounts for some 30%, e-commerce with nearly 25%, and the other revenues account for the remaining.

Geographic Reach

The US is Atlanta-based Oxford's largest market, accounting for more than 95% of its annual sales. International markets account for about 5% of sales.

The company makes apparel at a plant in Merida, Mexico. It has distribution centers and sales offices in Washington, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and New York. Overseas, Oxford has sales office in Hong Kong.

Sales and Marketing

Oxford sells its apparel on a wholesale basis to department stores and national chains, warehouse clubs, discount and specialty retailers, and other customers across the US. Its Lanier Clothes branded products are sold in more than 5,000 stores.

The Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer brands are marketed via print media such as catalogs, online (including social media), and through trade shows. The company spent $60 million, $64 million and $55 million in Advertising for fiscal year 2019, 2018, and 2017 respectively.

Financial Performance

Since 2015, revenues have been on the rise: For the period 2015-2019, revenue increased by 16%. Net earnings for the same period also increased.

Consolidated net sales increased $15 million, or 1%, in fiscal 2019. The increase in net sales was primarily driven by strong comparable sales increases in both Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer and a double-digit comparable sales increase in its smaller brands.

Net earnings for the year increased by 3% to $68.5 million due to higher net sales and higher operating income from SG&A and Royalties.

Cash and cash equivalents for the year was $52.5 million. Cash provided by operating activities was $121.9 million while investing activities used $37.4 million. Financing activities used another $41.3 million. Main cash uses were for purchases of property and equipment, dividends payments, and repayment of revolving credit.

Strategy

The company's business strategy is to develop and market compelling lifestyle brands and products that evoke a strong emotional response from its target consumers. It considers lifestyle brands to be those brands that have a clearly defined and targeted point of view inspired by an appealing lifestyle or attitude. Furthermore, it believes lifestyle brands that create an emotional connection, like Tommy Bahama, Lilly Pulitzer, and Southern Tide, can command greater loyalty and higher price points at retail and create licensing opportunities. The attraction of a lifestyle brand depends on creating a compelling product, effectively communicating the respective lifestyle brand message, and distributing products to consumers where and when they want them.

To further strengthen each lifestyle brand's connections with consumers, the company directly communicate with consumers through digital and print media on a regular basis. It believes its ability to effectively communicate the images, lifestyle, and products of its brands and create an emotional connection with consumers is critical to the success of its brands. Advertising for its brands often attempts to convey the lifestyle of the brand as well as a specific product.
