Financial Performance

In 2019, total Company net sales decreased 2.2%, compared with 2018. While net sales decreased, the company successfully executed plans to drive their top-line in the second half of the year due to the company's loyalty, digital marketing and merchandising programs. Digital sales increased 7% compared with 2018 and order pickup as a percentage of digital sales increased compared with 2018.

Nordstrom's net sales decrease of 2% started with the first half of the year below expectations, while they improved sales trends in the second half across our Full-Price and Off-Price businesses.

The company's cash held at the end of 2019 decreased by $104 million to $853 million, compared to $957 million in the prior year. Cash provided by operations was $1.2 billion, while cash used for investing and financing activities were, $909 million and $431 million, respectively.

As its Full-Price business evolves, the company's market strategy leverages its inventory to serve customers on its terms through investments in digital capabilities and in people, product and place. Nordstrom's goal is to gain market share while driving customer engagement and inventory efficiencies. There are two elements to this strategy: first, the company provides customers a greater selection of merchandise available for next-day pickup or delivery, without increasing inventory levels. Second, it increases engagement with customers by offering express services such as order pickup, returns and alterations at additional convenient locations. The company accelerated its strategy to five of its top markets — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco — in 2019 and will expand Nordstrom's strategy into five additional markets in 2020, including Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, Seattle and Toronto. In addition, the company is integrating Trunk Club into Nordstrom full-line stores and to create a cohesive styling offering across Nordstrom and to gain efficiencies.
