About Hot Topic, Inc.
US clothing retailer Hot Topic sells garments and accessories with a punky aesthetic in malls and online. Hot Topic's 600-plus stores in the US and Canada cater to males and females aged 12 to 22 and stock clothing inspired by current and classic rockers including Iron Maiden, Nirvana, and Metallica as well as popular culture, with designs licensed from the likes of Disney, Warner Bros., and Netflix. Hot Topic is owned by New York-based private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which also owns Kurt Geiger, Aeropostale, and Staples, among others.
Hot Topic has managed to survive and even thrive in the mall-pocalypse that is bankrupting malls and scuppering retailers across the US. The company success lies in targeting a specific niche -- fandoms -- with laser-like accuracy and it is often the only physical retailer accessible to teens that offers merchandise for niche subcultures. The company has done a great job in pivoting to changes in tastes, while its all-inclusive subculture format allows it to stock death-metal merchandise alongside, for instance, Pokémon accessories without friction. Commenters have alikened it to a mall-based version of a teenager's Tumblr feed.
