About Giant Eagle, Inc.

Giant Eagle has its talons firmly wrapped around parts of the mid-Atlantic and midwestern US. The retailer -- a market leader in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio -- operates some 475 stores under the brands Giant Eagle (neighborhood supermarkets), Market District (upscale grocery stores), and GetGo (convenience stores/gas stations). Beyond Pennsylvania and Ohio, the regional company has locations in Maryland, Indiana, and West Virginia. Along with traditional grocery and convenience products, the chains feature services such as pharmacies, in-store banking, and professional dry cleaning, as well as delivery and curbside pickup.

Giant Eagle has supermarket and convenience store operations. Its supermarkets include some 215 locations under the Giant Eagle/Giant Eagle Express and Market District/Market District Express banners. The company has 250-plus convenience stores under the GetGo name.

Geographic Reach

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle has some 475 supermarkets and convenience stores in five US states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana.

Financial Performance

Giant Eagle is indeed a giant among regional grocery chains with about $9 billion in sales. It is among the 50 largest privately held companies in the US.

Along with many other retailers, grocery and otherwise, Giant Eagle is focused on leveraging technology to improve the customer experience. It had already built out its omnichannel offerings with an ecommerce site and mobile apps, and in 2019 began testing a no-wait checkout platform in one store. The technology keeps track of all products selected by customers as they move through the store, allowing them to pay via app when done and simply exit. As part of its long-term focus on technology and digital transformation, the company plans to open in early 2020 a technology annex in its hometown of Pittsburgh to house some 150 technology team members.

Giant Eagle also continues to expand its service offerings. In mid-2019 it announced plans for health stations in more than 200 of its stores; the stations will provide free health screenings as well as educational tools and resources.

Company Background

When Joe Porter, Ben Chait, and Joe Goldstein sold their chain of 125 Eagle grocery stores in Pittsburgh to Kroger in 1928, the agreement stated that the men would have to leave the grocery business for three years. In retrospect, Kroger should have made the term last for the length of their lives, because in 1931 the three men joined the owners of OK Grocery -- Hyman Moravitz and Morris Weizenbaum -- and launched a new chain of grocery stores called Giant Eagle. Eventually, the chain would knock Kroger out of the Pittsburgh market.
