About Dillard's Inc.

Sandwiched between retail giants such as Macy's and discount chains such as Kohl's, Dillard's is rethinking its strategy and trimming its store count. The department store chain operates about 290 locations in some 30 US states, covering the Sunbelt and the central US. Its stores primarily cater to middle- and upper-middle-income women, selling name-brand and private-label merchandise with a focus on apparel and home furnishings. Founded in 1938 by William Dillard, family members, through the W. D. Company, control the company

Operations

Dillard's' largest product category is ladies' apparel, with more than 20% of sales, followed by men's apparel and accessories (15%), ladies' accessories and lingerie (15%), shoes (15%), and cosmetics (nearly 15%). Children's apparel, home and furniture, and construction bring in the remainder.

Most of its stores are located in suburban shopping malls and open-air centers. Customers may also purchase merchandise online at the company's e-commerce website, which features online gift registries and a variety of other services. Dillard's exclusive brand lines include Antonio Melani, Gianni Bini, GB, Roundtree & York, and Daniel Cremieux.

Beyond department stores, Dillard's owns CDI Contractors, a Little Rock, Arkansas-based construction firm that was started to build and remodel Dillard's' stores.

Geographic Reach

Texas and Florida are the Arkansas-based department store chain's two largest markets, accounting for about a third of total stores. The company operates about 290 Dillard's stores including over 25 clearance centers, representing nearly 50 million square feet of space, in about 30 states.

Financial Performance

Dillard's has seen uneven revenues in recent years. Its annual revenues have fallen more than 4% since 2015.

Revenue increased to $6.5 billion in 2018, a 1% increase from the year prior. The slight increase was driven by a 2% increase in comparable store sales and significantly higher sales of home goods and furniture.

Net income was $170 million in fiscal year 2018, a drop from $221 million in fiscal year 2017. Selling, general and administrative expenses grew slightly in fiscal 2018 to $1.6 billion.

Cash provided by operating activities was $367.2 million in fiscal 2018, while investing activities used $127.7 million. Financing activities used another $303 million.

Strategy

Traditional department store chains have struggled in recent years, and Dillard's has not been immune to the challenging retail environment.

While other department store chains have made some radical changes to reach modern customers, Dillard's is known for maintaining its traditional format at a high quality level, offering on-trend fashions, and investing in superior customer service. The company has a loyal older customer base that has remained true to the chain, which has helped it during the downturn.

Customers have increasingly high expectations around digital offerings, and Dillard's offers an e-commerce website and has made investments into developing a more robust omnichannel experience.

Looking to reduce costs, Dillard's has continued to close underperforming stores in recent years.
